Hey, I've missed a few PE updates recently and I'm heading to Edmonton this weekend to meet my brand new niece, Emily, so here's the scoop.
The past week or so in K-2 PE we have been continuing our
focus on rolling, tossing, throwing and catching. We have used a variety
of different objects, such as bean bags, fluff balls, volleyballs and even
rubber chickens. The students have enjoyed the different activities that
help us work on these skills. "Bowler's Rollers" was one
activity that helped the students practice rolling a ball
at a target. As an added challenge to the game, we had "pin
guards" that tried to knock the ball away with their feet to protect the
pin from falling. Students learned some great offensive and defensive
strategies to knock down the pin or help protect it.
For a fitness break last week, the little ones also
completed their first "Hamster Workout". If you haven't heard
about it yet, throw on the Hamster Dance song and ask them to show
you (even the older ones). I'm sure they will enjoy telling you all
about my pet hamster, his crazy workout and his amazing escape. For some
fun, try it out for yourself! In the upper grades, we have been learning volleyball basics, such as the ready position, footwork, the forearm pass and the overhead pass. It can get a little crazy in the gym sometimes with thirty or more volleyballs flying around, but we're managing so far. We will hopefully get into serving and modified game play next week.
We have also completed various fitness activities in the upper grades including a "pick 6" and "scooter relays." I like to keep their muscles guessing and mix up our warmups and exercises everyday. This helps to keep it interesting, motivating and fun for the students. It seems to be working so far and the students are showing improvement each day.
I think that's all for now from the PE department. Have a great weekend!
